What grade do I need on my final calculator: How is the required score calculated?
To determine what score you need on your final exam, our calculator uses the formula:
Score Needed = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight))] ÷ Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, your final is worth 25% (0.25), and you desire an A- (90%), the calculation is: [90 - (85 × 0.75)] ÷ 0.25 = 105% (meaning extra credit is required). What will my final grade be calculator: How does my final exam score affect my overall class grade?
Your final class grade is determined by blending your pre-final grade with your final exam mark using their respective syllabus weights. If you currently have an 88% and you score 92% on a final exam worth 20%, your final class grade will be (88 × 0.80) + (92 × 0.20) = 88.8% (B+).
What if the final exam score needed is greater than 100%?
If the calculator indicates you need over 100%, it means that under normal circumstances it is mathematically impossible to reach that letter grade without extra credit, bonus questions on the exam, or an instructor's grading curve. In this scenario, check the scenario matrix below the calculator to see if the next lower letter grade is achievable.
What if the required final score is negative or zero?
If the calculation yields 0% or a negative score, congratulations! Your current grade is already high enough that even if you receive zero points on the final exam, you will still achieve your target grade.
